#605 – Velveteen

I think this is a common occurrence for many of us. We have a beloved toy of some sort that transcends our childhood. No matter how shabby or worn or broken they become our eyes still see happiness and comfort. There is a special sort of time travel we experience when we hold them again.

D’awwww! I am overwhelmed with warm fuzzies!

  2. Dwarg91 says:

    cute yet disturbing

  3. SharkJumper says:

Definitely the creepiest “teddy bear” ever. And yes, I’m including pedobear.

  4. Drakey says:

Brownie. He’s a little teddy bear that still watches over me as I sleep.

  5. Mike says:

I gave away all my stuffed animals when I was twelve–thirteen years ago. I still miss them every now and again.

  6. Torg says:

Does anyone else want to know what happened to Biff’s teddy bear?

  7. kenshin620 says:

mmm, nah I’d say Tokunaga is still creepyer and cuddlier than biff’s bear. *cuddles his tokunaga*

  8. Chris says:

Wow that’s one of the creepiest strips I’ve seen and not just Biff, but all web comic strips in general.

  9. Blake says:

I’m guessing the teddy bear goes through about the same things Biff does, but slightly less indestructible.

  10. SEA says:

    …this makes me remember…goodbye old friends. =(

    That’s heartwarming =)

  11. Atcote says:

This justifies a ‘D’awwwww!’ (Dammit, someone beat me to it).

My teddy remains at home while I’m at university, to protect my room from intruders – I assume. In truth I did have some trouble leaving him at home…

  12. RG says:

    Heartwarming. Yet creepy.

  13. Trevor says:

    I agree, creepy.

  14. MaskedMan says:

    Somewhere out there, there’s a one-eyed teddy bear loooking for a missing eye… Looking… Creeping… Sneaking… <.<

  15. Creepy.

But the comment thing under it was sweet

  16. Just yesterday my brother (visiting from Cocoa) found his old teddy bear in the garage. My brother reclaimed the bear and named it “Radar”. I, however, have named it “Nearly Headless Nick”.

“Biff’s pillow watches, and waits for the right moment to strike…”

  17. Ryan says:

That would freak me out…a single teddy eye-ball always watching…waiting…waiting to tell the rest of it deformed body to attack while you’re sleeping…(btw, andore mordre, enjoyed your quote too)

Admittedly, I do have a bunny that my father gave me when I was 6; Its in particularly good condition for being over 18 years old. I don’t snuggle with it, though.

  18. enigmelisma2739 says:

before I saw the caption I thought that was a gunshot hole.

  19. Twilightfairy says:

I’m 19 and i still have a stuffed teddy bear i like to keep on my bed.

This was cute, in an eyeball-ing sorta way.

  20. Girlgenius says:

lol! Cute!! I’m 18 and still have a stuffed animal that I sleep with every night (an elephant!). Proves that you’re never too old to have that special someone… even if it is stuffed.
Btw… this is my first post! I discovered the Book of Biff not too long ago, and nearly wet my pants laughing at most of the comics. Keep up the good work!!!

  21. Chris says:

@Girlgenius – Thanks! It’s always great to hear from new readers. 🙂

  22. The Dustin says:

Biff took terrible care of his teddy bear. I’m 19 and I’ve had my teddy bear all my life (all 19 years) and it’s still in great shape, but when a seam ripped I hand sewed it back together.

  23. benjiroo says:

just for curiosity’s sake, what exactly is the comfort quotient of Mr. Snuggle Bear’s right eye when compared with his previous condition of wholeness? was there any drop in efficiency? can more than one person be comforted by little bits of Mr Snuggle or is there an exclusivity problem?

(been reading your comic a long time, and i really enjoy it. keep em coming!)

  24. Ebby says:

25 and still have and cuddle with my stuffed dog–actually I have two. The original that I’ve had since I was seven, and a second one I got when I was 12. I alternate them, though the younger one is more cuddly, having been treated kinder than the older one.

  25. DracoZereul says:

I have a cute T-rex stuffed animal that I got a couple months after I was born. It’s probably what started my dragon/reptile fixation, but even at 21 years of age, it still lies on my bed, in near-perfect condition, and I plan on keeping it to pass on to my kid.

  26. Chris says:

    @DracoZereul – awesome. 🙂

  27. no name says:

That’s very creepy. Not one of your funniest comics, I must say.

  28. Chris says:

@no name – but is it the creepiest?

  29. William Syler says:

    Personally, I think so.
I mean, he’s sleeping with an eye!

  30. KingRidley says:

Man that’s some kind of scary teddy bear.

Also I want to tell you that the random comic button doesn’t seem to be working. It just keeps sending me back to this comic.

  31. Chris says:

@KingRidley – yeah, Internet Explorer on a PC doesn’t like the random button anymore. (did it ever?) I’ll have to try and figure out what happened.

  32. benjiroo says:

    “…he sees you when you’re sleeping…he watches, waiting, waiting…”

  33. Zaffa says:

Methinks the Gungan got to it, loooong, loooong ago.

  34. random person says:

For all Sonic fans, the only thing creepyer than a bear doll in there, is the Tails doll. Yikes.

  35. Zaffa says:

    @random person- *fetal position*

  36. Knight Blazer says:

So Chris, you’ve seen that movie about the veleteen rabbit too. Cool, I thought I was all alone on that one. Or maybe I still am…

  37. Azrin says:

It’s pretty humorous if you’re one of those kids who hung onto an item like that. I never did, but my best friend did. He kept this pillow that ended up looking like it had been through a blender, but he loved the thing. A year or two ago, his brother tore it into pieces for some reason, and I guess that was the end of that… Pretty sad when I think about it. Ah well.

I love how these comics/commentaries are so easily to relate to~.

  38. Sigvaldi says:

Ah yes, memories of Old Dog. I think I have many of you beat. Old dog sits on a shelf in my house, revered by many. 30 years I’ve had him. But here’s the kicker. My father owned him before that. 18 years with my father when it was passed on to me. It was already bare of fur, all rubbed off by the cuddling. I dragged it everywhere. My poor mother had to stitch it back together so many times. He has none of the original stuffing, and his mid-section was replaced years ago with a floral fabric. And I love every beat up bit of him. I guess he’s sort of the stuffed animal equivelant of a bionic dog.

Love the comic, first time posting.

  39. @random person:
The Tails Doll? I’ve established a small-time Cult among many game servers around that freak of nature. >:3

  40. @ Knight Blazer – The Velveteen Rabbit is a pretty old story.

  41. Echo_Hotel says:

Yea “Squeaky” has been through a complete fur transplant 4 squeaker mechanisms and a couple re-stuffing’s HOWEVER his eyes and nose are original.
It’s not surprising if you consider that he’s been mine for almost 30 years at this point and I think he was a secondary of my father’s at one point. He still helps me when I’m sick alone at home or just beat down by the world.

  42. Karen El says:

Biff, as usual, takes things to a creepy level of extreme.

  43. K says:

The only stuffed thing near my bed is a plush dragon my sister gave me a few years ago as an xmas gift. It’s there mainly because she’d probably kill me if it wasn’t.

There’s also a posable wire-and-plush Jabberwock menacing the other side of my room.

  44. speearr says:

How morbid….what’d he do with the rest of the bear?!

  45. solar says:

lol i had a blanket myself it was a down-filled crib comfiter that i lugged around everywear even after all the feathers spilled out
i still have it too its in my childhood momento box along with all my favorite childends books and toys

i still have many stuffed toys mostly dolls of vidio game charcters(pokemon, kirby, erc) though my most noteable though is a life sized timber wolf that lives on my bed lol

  46. jykcor says:

….so…….creepy……I’ll have nightmares for the rest of the week….

  47. AudibleBard says:

I personally think you all are crazy. There’s nothing creepy about this comic. However, if any of you saw something I think is creepy, you’d probably freak out and/or go insane. Fortunately, there isn’t really anything I find creepy. And on another note, I was given a teddy bear of sorts, but never grew any attachment to the thing. I never really grew attachment to anything like that. If you think about it, there’s not really a whole lot of reason to, or point to getting attached to it. It’s simply an object. It will never love you back, show affection etc. It will only sit there, slowly detoriating. The only thing it does is trigger a reaction for some reason or other in your brain that calms you down; something you can do on your own without the help of stimuli.

PostScript: Biff is highly amusing, the gags are intelligent and well thought. Mad Props to the author. Keep ’em coming, Chris.

  48. TheGSE says:

Wow, Audibard. I bet you hate ska music, too. Where is your soul, wo/man?
I have a 17-year-old stuffed blue bear by the name of ‘T.’ He has a ‘scar’ on his chest and a stab wound in his right armpit. I refuse to fix both problems.

  49. wisp says:

@audibard wow way to be a fuzzy moment killer…. i still have my stuffed white leather frog from almost 23 years ago. i got it the day i was born. it was a gift from my grandfather who i was named after and who died mere hours after giving me the frog. he died in the same hospital i was born in. so i dont think i could EVER part with it.

  50. Alice Love says:

To however said this wasn’t funny : Just because it’s a comic, don’t assume it needs to be funny all the time. Most comics are based on pure shock factor, some actually tell stories through art, some are 100 % funny but some are funny and surreal. I like comics that aren’t 100 funny, they always seem so forced. Biff never feels forced.

Anyway, great panel, this reminds me of suckeythumb my teddy bear 🙂

  51. Michael-Forest says:

I have some stuffed animals I’ve kept since when I was a small child. My wife absolutely adores them, and will occasionally play with them and call them by name. They’re not in perfect condition, but they’ve held together alright.

  52. YukiSnowflake says:

Haha, i still have mine (*somewhere*)
It’s got “wooly” written on it’s left foot, and “bear” written on it’s right foot.
I (*very imaginatively*) called it wooly bear. I was’nt sure WHY i called it that, though… |;)

  53. Ciaj says:

My first pistol. A .45. Not exactly cuddly, but very comforting. Especially when you hear the odd creaking and bumping during the night.
