#522 – Egress

The sideshow exhibits were always very interesting in movies and television. I finally got to see some as a kid at a county fair. They were very lame. One room was a guy sitting at a table watching a tiny black and white television. I can’t even remember was was supposed to be interesting about him. I just remember thinking to myself, “Is that his job? To sit in a dirty old tent and watch TV all day?” Now of course I sit in a dirty cubicle and stare at a computer screen all day. Maybe I should charge admission to come and stare at me.

I wonder what the title means…
    Curse my limited vocabulary…

    *one quick internet search later*

    Egress
    1. the act or an instance of going, esp. from an enclosed place.
    2. a means or place of going out; an exit.
    3. the right or permission to go out.

If you’re confused about “Egress,” here’s your explanation.

Back in the old days of sideshows, signs would point somewhere, saying “This way to the Egress!” or something to that effect. People would follow the signs, thinking the “Egress” was another monster or freak. They would lead to a door, which would say “The Egress is through here!”. They would go through the door, and find themselves outside. They would probably have to pay again to get back into the building or tent.

“Egress” means “Exit” in french or some other language.

This has been your friendly neighborhood Kbman, in ur Biff, informing ur readers.

  4. PsychoDuck says:

Damn, Kbman, that’s one dirty trick.

    …why didn’t I think of it? 😛

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  5. Anthony says:

As for the Egress, he could have just read Pratchett, “Hat Full Of Sky”.

It’s an English work, with a Latin root.

  6. Micah says:

Biff’s impressed expression looks like all his others. heh.

  7. Shanchan says:

How did he escape the eyebrow exhibit…

  8. MaskedMan says:

    Carny week, indeed! Yay!

If they’ve got a Geek, be afraid… Be *VERY* afriad!

@Shanchan; There’s probably a handful of carnies waiting in ambush for Biff, to snatch him and put him in with the rest of the sideshow freaks! God help the carnival, if they succeed!
    😀

  9. Jackson says:

Subtle. Even in the context of Carnival Week, it took me a moment’s thought to get the sideshow reference…although maybe that’s just me being thick as a brick.

  10. FSOneblin says:

This is my first time posting. He escaped the eyebrow exhibit by useing his cotton candy disguise. Duh.

    Don’t panic: FSOneblin

    when i see a hangman’s noose
on a guitar, my interest goes up too.

  12. Gobbledegook says:

Chris, I think I know what your man in the tent was supposed to be: “The man of tomorrow”

  13. no name says:

Lol. Funny as usual with Biff. Shanchan, I think your comment was actually funnier than the cartoon, no offense Chris. 😀

  14. Shanchan says:

@FSO You’re right! It all comes together now…

@no name Thanks but I can only accentuate the humor that is already there. ^_^ (now the pressure’s on and I’ll never comment again! …nah)

  15. Rolf says:

@MaskedMan: That’s why he was wearing the cotton candy disguise

  16. Gato says:

“It’s got the head of a rabbit! The body of a dragon! And the body….OF A RABBIT!”

  17. Buckeroo says:

No no, the legendary esquilax is a rare horse born with the head of a rabbit and the body of a rabbit.

As for the egress, Kbman has basically the right information, but the way I always heard its origins (and Wikipedia backs me up on this) was at P.T. Barnum’s American Museum. “At one point, Barnum noticed that people were lingering too long at his exhibits. He posted signs indicating ‘This Way to the Egress’. Not knowing that ‘Egress’ was another word for ‘Exit,’ people followed the signs to what they assumed was a fascinating exhibit…and ended up outside.”

  18. Torg says:

A horse with the head of a rabbit and the body of a rabbit? Wouldn’t that be a rabbit?

  19. Eric says:

    Gibson SG Double Neck!! =D

  20. Torg says:

    Or is that the joke?

  21. Kbman says:

    @ Buckeroo
Well, I just remembered the trick, not it’s origins. And being helpful was my good deed for that day.

  22. Buckeroo says:

Yes, Torg, that was indeed the joke. From the Simpsons episode in which we glimpse Lisa’s future for the first time. Chief Wiggum was running a tent that featured “legendary creatures,” and that is how he described the esquilax he had.

@Kbman – And a fine deed it was, sir.

  23. The Dustin says:

I’ve only once ever seen anyone use one of those. and it was Daft Punk.

  24. Djorra says:

This makes sense when you take into account this week’s theme is Carnival.

  25. Zach Light says:

Last time I saw 1 of those was in FLCL.

  26. Allie says:

Jimmy Page uses a two-headed Gibson SG (just like the one in this panel) to play “Stairway to Heaven,” or at least he did when I watched “The Song Remains the Same.”

I saw Cheap Trick in concert last summer and the guitarist was playing a three-headed guitar at one point. That thing was a monster…I honestly don’t know how he didn’t fall over wielding that axe.

  27. YukiSnowflake says:

    lol…
people also think egress is a female eagle…
i read that in…. some book ive forgotten…
hmm…. ill be annoyed all day if i dont remember…
    ….. … . …… …. .. ….. … . …… …. .. ….. … . …… …. ..
(theres the wee free men, a hat full of sky and… damn, whats the 3rd one called? oh well i give up)

    a-anyway……
this reminds me of what my younger brother was watching the other day… sonic underground (whcih sucks and kills sonic)
    he has a 2-headed guitar.
which he shouldn’t have. it sucks.
