#462 – Ceph

I’ve never really liked calamari. Every once in a while I’m in some sort of social situation where it’s being served. I always give it a try but it just really isn’t my thing. It always seems like chewy onion rings.

Aw, man, I found out at my brother’s reception that I love calamari for exactly that reason. They are squishy/chewy onion rings. But I don’t know how well I would like them from somewhere else, because it was a Greek restaurant in Chicago, and other places don’t fry it apparently.

I went to a Japanese Ramen House and ordered the seafood ramen. It had octopus in it, which didn’t taste all that bad, but it was too chewy to actually chew.

I’ve had some squid jerky. That stuff was good.

    Mmm, Squid.

What’s really nice about using a squid in the arctic is that you can use them to climb small icebergs as well.

That’s the thing with calamari rings. Sometimes when I get them they’re utterly perfect, not chewy at all, and amazing dipped in tartare sauce, but sometimes they’re like crumbed rubber bands and it is physically impossible for me to eat them. It’s just a matter of luck I guess. They can be really good though. But I tend to stay away from ordering them at a restaurant or takeaway shop just on the off-chance they’ll be rubbery. You should definitely take the chance if you haven’t experienced good calamari though.

Ah! So it really *is* weird clothes week.

I almost never find myself confronted with squid rings. I think I might like them, but it’s been so long since I’ve had any that that I’m not sure.

  8. Gobbledegook says:

    Squid’s not so bad.
I like when they are fried too long and get a really crispy coating, but are still chewy underneath.

I spent too many biology classes disecting arthropods and cephalopods to enjoy calamari or shellfish. I can apparently cook very good calamari, though; even my Dad will eat it, and normally he ‘doesn’t eat the bait.’

    That’s a beautifully drawn comic.
I’ve swum with squid, so I’d never
harm one, but if a squid was willing,
    sure, I’d wear one too.

    Thanks Seraphine 😉

Calamari is one of my favourite foods ever. Add a little bit of tartar sauce and I’m in heaven…

  13. Ben says:

they suck fried. try them grilled, and it’s incredible!

  14. Magical Nurse Ban says:

Heh…I would wear one too and it can spit ink on command, too. (^_^)v

I’ve tried squid before, people always said it was chewy, hard to chew, rubbery.. Maybe suishi squid is different, or maybe I was just expecting something to much like salt water taffy (hardest stuff to chew I swear), but it wasn’t all that difficult, munched it to mulch in just a few bites…

  16. caffiend says:

Meh.. everyone else can have the rings…
My favorite part of calamari are the tentacles (aka the mustache), as they are a bit cruchier (and more fun to play with)

  17. Kronski says:

If your calamari tastes chewy, that means it is crappy calamari. Good calamari is buttery and crisp.

I love calamari, myself. I remembered getting it once as an appetizer as a kid, and I was hooked ever since. First time I ate it, I kid you not, I thought it kinda tasted like chicken. Now that I’m much older, I obviously know the difference, but I still love the stuff, and get it at every opportunity when my family goes out to eat.
Honestly, I don’t know whether I’ve had rubbery calamari or not. I’m not that picky when I eat. As long as it’s the animal/vegetable I ordered, and as long as its edible, I rarely mind the texture of it, nor complain if it isn’t up to standard.

  19. Thomas says:

    That squid is stylish.

  20. Reg says:

*sigh* Biff, you come up with a great invention yesterday and now you wrap yourself in squids. Though it is pretty funny!
And I completely agrere with you Kronski.

  21. AJ says:

Urgh I hate calamari, but I love onion rings so I always end up trying some when it’s put in front of me hoping that maybe this time it will taste like onion rings.

  22. nikie says:

i had calamari once. our 6th grade class went to catalina island for three days and the people who were too chicken to go snorkling at night stayed behind and dissected leftover squid from a nearby restaurant. after dissecting the squid, we got to eat it. the sauce was good but the squid we all decided was nasty. oh, and we cooked it before eating it. that’s imporant.

    i don’t know if i’d like it now. it’s been 6+ years and now i’m a vegetarian.

  23. PsychoDuck says:

    “i don’t know if i’d like it now. it’s been 6+ years and now i’m a vegetarian.

    That answers that question.

Chewy onion rings? Whats not to like?

  25. Chivalrybean says:

When I see squid sushi, or, now that I think about it, octopi sushi, I want to know if it’ll stick to a window if thrown.

  26. Hagen says:

Good calamari is not that chewy. It is tender. And there are many more ways to eat it besides fried. I’ve had baked cuttlefish stuffed with crab, sauted calamari, boiled calamari, etc. There are only about a half dozen good places I have found in Houston but when I was in Italy half the places that served it in costal areas had good tender calamari

  27. Chelsey-Wa says:

I feel like I’m eating rubber bands.

  28. August says:

The best calimari I’ve ever had was at this smaller restaurant in Wylie TX. Not only did you get the rings, but there were actually small curled up octopi in it! Tiny fried sea creatures! Aww, it was fantastic, sadly though, every time I’ve ordered squid since then it has sucked.

  29. Sydney says:

man, I love sqiud. I love octopus too as well as the very slimy and aquired taste of sea urchin. I don’t like cooked fishes though like salmon or tuna. Just sashimi style.

  30. The ill mannered M says:

Calamari is an absolutely divine gift to my taste buds. I curse you for denying it’s sublime taste and texture and kindly ask you to refer me to such social events that serve it.

  31. BrainpanSonata says:

My mom and I both love teppanyaki squid.

  32. Hammad says:

    He actually looks very fashionable.

  33. Dorten says:

You should try calamari stew. It’s soft and delicious, not chewy.
