#417 – Strata

It was great when I figured out that I could stay really warm in the winter by wearing layers. My legs and feet were always the coldest. I put on socks and then sweat pants, then a second pair of socks that went over the ends of the sweat pants and then jeans over the top. I could play out in the snow all day without freezing my toes off.

It’s not cold enough here to require that much layering.

  2. Shiloh says:

It’s freezing here. My goodness. I’m shivering in my living room.

  3. Gene says:

I actually layer shirts year round, regardless of the temperature. I find that the undershirt keeps me cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It’s strange, and no one seems to believe me… but, I can attest to the fact that it does indeed work.

  4. PsychoDuck says:

Man, I could wear so many more socks than that at once. Seriously, ten on each foot, guaranteed.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  5. Bunnyman says:

It doesn’t snow here. Ever. It gets down to the 40’s sometimes, but no snow. I think the last time we got notable snow here was 20 years ago, and even then it was only an inch or two on the roof of some two story buildings.

Then again, this is SoCal. It’s not supposed to snow here. Just get cold and rain sometimes.

    1. fatemaster1 says:

When you say it gets down to the 40’s I presume you mean +40ºF, which is above freezing, you can’t freeze water at those temperatures, no frozen water, no snow. +32ºF and under to get snow. Also, that’s not cold, you don’t know cold. It can drop to -40º here. At that temperature, it doesn’t matter which system you use. Celsius, Fahrenheit, it’s all the same at -40º.

    @bunnyman:

its just as bad when it snows about midnight, and your all hyped up in the morning, until you realise that its britain and the snow will have melted by then.

i live in a town where it doesnt snow, even when theres supposedly 3-foot snow covering england. you drive out of the town, and after about half a minute, you get to the snowy areas. its so annoying!

  7. Crusader says:

Gene: I believe you! It works like double-glazing, keeping you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold.

Oh, English snow… Never snows properly here, unless you’re in the north…

  8. Nick Steele says:

Supposedly there is, but i’ve not seen snow here for YEEEARZ!
I live in the north-west, and here there’s mountains in every direction, so i don’t get any good extreme weather at all.

  9. Taz says:

Socks really bother me for some reason. Even when my feet are cold, I’m much happier not wearing them.

I’m also wondering why this comic is titlted ‘Strata’. I usually try to figure it out myself, but I can’t help but be really interested in why things are named the way they are.

Sometimes names can have backstories, really sraight to the point meanings, or complex reasons that wouldn’t be understandable without a bit of research. The process of naming can be so chaotic.

    Tell me~?

  10. birdie says:

    @Taz- strata mean layers

i’m getting sick of snow. where i live, i get up, shovel out a driveway that no one will plow and that the city plows in, and then an hour later it starts to snow again.

on a different note, i love wool socks. i discovered that when i was living in the woods this summer. they’re seriously the best thing on the face of the planet.

  11. MaskedMan says:

I would have killed for extra layers of socks, growing up. I literally went to school in ragged canvas sneakers held together with safety pins, in Colorado winters.

    Being poor sucked.

  12. SEA says:

No need for so much socks here 😀

  13. Seraphine says:

I *LOVE* Biff’s socks. Nice clean
warm socks are so sexy. Yumm.

  14. Joe says:

thanks to New England Winters and Patriots football games i have discovered battery powered heated wool socks….simply amazing.

  15. unknowledge says:

layers always caused me problems, especially when yo had to do the 100 yard penguin run into the bathroom so you didn’t soak yourself…

  16. Graceofbass says:

I live in Idaho, and it’s actually snowing right now. It has been all week. I am sooo glad our heater works now. It went out for a week, and luckily we put plastic up on the windows for extra insulation, so it didn’t get below 60F in the house. But, needless to say, it does get very, very cold in Idaho.

  17. Graceofbass says:

And yay for whoever makes wool socks. You’re my hero.

  18. Robot Panda says:

D: I thoroughly dislike snow. It’s pretty, it’s nice, but I have little body fat to keep me warm, and apparently do not have the smarts to layer up XD;; I’m lazy that way.

  19. dragonbrad says:

I once was addicted to spandex face masks

  20. dragonbrad says:

taz, like strata- sphere, our ozone layer is made of multiple layers( strata

  21. Reg says:

I’m just understanding the tilte for today’s comic.
All of a sudden the temperature is in the 50’s and that makes me very happy. But it’s slowly starting to get colder… if it’s going to get cold I want to see some snow at least, and not all this rain! XD

  22. MOD says:

i hate the english weather. all we get is rain, wind, a tiny bit of sun (which warms you up if you stay still for 10 minutes) the last time we had proper snow, i didnt get to enjoy it cos it was a school day, and by the time school was out, it had mostly gone

  23. pieman says:

over the holidays, my brother went to poland with some friends. he sed that there was a a few feet of snow falling overnight, and by the morning all the streets had been ploughed, including the minor ones.

you could tell who were tourists: they were having snowball fights.

  24. Caitlin says:

You think lacking in snow in England is bad? Australia! Hell for snow-lovers! Canberra especially, we get nasty cold temperatures but no snow, only frost, fog, rain and wind. Ugh.

  25. Ben says:

I think hell would be hell for snow-lovers.

  26. Felix says:

I do that in the summer too.

  27. Psymon says:

It’s (substantially) snowed here twice in the last forty years or so. Substantially meaning more than ½ inch. We might have gotten a few “heavy frost” levels of “snow”, from which we could scrape together a six-inch snowman shape, but never anything that stuck. Then again, not having enough ice to freeze the walkways means you don’t have to shovel snow.

  28. Twigs says:

I would kill to live in England or New Zealand or pretty much anywhere mild. I live in Canada and where I am, it’s currently -27 degrees C.

  29. Kyle says:

Once my brother was traveling and he couldn’t fit all his shirts and pants in. So he had to layer, easy enough. Not when you are traveling to El Salvador. It is just about on the equator

  30. -2! says:

To this day in the Canadian winter I ware a pair of pants, socks and teeshirt. Outside I will throw on a coat.

  31. Pix says:

    he must like socks
