#365 – Stack

I frequently sleep on my arm in such a way that it falls asleep. It’s really annoying because it wakes me up and I have to use my good arm to flop the sleeping one into a better position. The funniest time was when I fell asleep with my arm behind my head. I woke up looking at a hand right near my face that I couldn’t feel and didn’t recognize as my own. I tried to sit up in shock but the arm that I would have used to push myself up was the one that was asleep. I collapsed back into the pillow, laughing, when I realized what had happened.

  1. MoX says:

Once my arm fell asleep, and I woke up with something cold and moving on my face. I grabbed it with my hand and it was was a hand. I found it funny too once I figured it out. It can be scary though.

  2. MoX says:

Sorry for the double post but there are 365 commics now! Make a page-a-day calendar. Biff could be on my computer and my desk top. The more the merrier!

  3. Sleepingorange says:

His poor eye-brows look so listless. Have they fallen asleep?

  4. Envious Luna says:

I’ve done this, although of course not nearly as many as Biff.
Usually I end up kicking some of them off and waking up in the middle of the night, freezing.

  5. Imaginary says:

I once slept in a very cold room, it was so cold that I ended up sleeping on my legs all curled up, when I woke up I didn’t realise my legs were asleep from the knee down. It was kind of funny when I went to stand up and collapsed back onto the floor. It took me a full minute to realise why I wasn’t standing anymore. XP

  6. Chuck says:

When I stock the top shelves at work all the blood rushes out of my arms and they gt all tingly. I shake them out before they fall completely sleep, though.

  7. Unleaded_Fuel says:

Once I woke up and someone punched me in the face. I didn’t realise my arm was asleep and it turns out my arm was the one who punched me. Needless to say, I don’t trust it not to try and kill me now.

  8. trueblaze says:

There have been a couple of times where I have woken up yet my body hasn’t yet. It’s kinda creepy not being able to feel/move your body for a few seconds.

  9. Vachon says:

I’ve done that before, I’ve actually once managed to fall asleep in a way that both my arms were asleep. Sufficient to say getting into a more comfortable position when you cant move either of your arms just was not easy.

  10. Blargen-Vargen says:

This seems oddly reminiscent of the Princess and the Pea children’s story

  11. Malachite Dragon says:

Wouldnt that mean that Biff is the pea?

  12. KayRis says:

I’ve been tempted to do that on some nights, but my mother would never let me take that many blankets to my room. After about the fourth one she’d sense that something was up and she wouldn’t let me take any more. My room doesn’t have heating.

  13. MaskedMan says:

    Blanket Stack!
That’s my wife, through and through… She’s alredy got two comforters and three blankets on the bed, and we’ve only just this AM had the first frost. Meanwhile, I’m sleeping with the blankets all pushed aside and only a sheet covering my body… But not even my whole body, as I sleep with one leg out, to serve as a radiator. If I could get away with opening a window, I would, but that might lead to a divorce. 😉

  14. Ali says:

maybe this is what caused your tendonitits

  15. Mithras says:

I used to think that legs were the worst body part to have fall asleep, but to think about an entire body falling asleep…
Can you imagine the pins and needles? OUCH!

Also, I completely agree with MoX. Now that you have 365 comics, a day by day calendar is a possibility. I don’t think you should go make one right away, given the fact that you only have exactly the right amount and no more, but the fact is that at this moment, a calendar is now a possibility. I’d be really interested to see one of those made.
    I know I’d get one!

  16. Seraphine says:

I slept once in the snow,
    in a sleeping bag, cuddled
    against another sleeping bag
and still had to gasp for air.
My body parts do not sleep
    independently of each other.

  17. VG-Alchemist says:

Sometimes my mind and my eyes halfway wackes up before the rest of my body. Once, I got madly in panic and tryed to call for help but there was nearly no voice coming out. after some time becoming crazy with fright somehow i woked up (completly). Ever since that, im trying to keep my cool and wake up which happens faster if im concentrating on it.

  18. Wolfmane says:

My grandpa would sleep with grandma’s head on his arm, and one night his arm fell asleep. When he woke up, he thought that there was another man’s arm underneath his wife’s head! So, he took the strange hand and jerked it out, waking up grandma at the same time, then he realized that it was his own arm.

I’ve tried to get all the feather blankets in our house on top of me, but nobody lets me! They’re all meanies!

  19. Antonio says:

One in an aunt home, the bed had toomany wool blankets that I can not sleep facing up since my toes hurt under the weight.

One happened to me that I slep on my arm and wake up seeing a hand near my head, I take it with the other hand was so cold and feel like rubberised, that give a great scare.

  20. Plankster says:

One time I was camping (in a disaster zone-I was a relief worker) and it had been really cold the previous night. So I got an army sleeping bag that was for volunteers to use and I zipped myself into it. Halfway through the night, even though it was 30 degrees outisde, I was drenched in sweat. So I let my arm hang out of the sleeping bag to help keep me cool. When I woke up, my arm was numb and purple!

  21. kiwi says:

when I was little I used to think there were ants under my skin causing the pins and needles feeling.

  22. Dingensblah says:

One day I woke up with my right arm asleep and my girlfriend sleeping on my right arm. It took me 45 minutes to wake her up. I needed too pee really bad.

  23. Dingensblah says:

sorry for double post: girl on the LEFT.

  24. Micah says:

Chris, I’ve had a similar experience. Somehow my arm got in the air while I was asleep and being up so long, it went to sleep and it fell and smacked me in the face and I woke up and saw it on my bed and I didn’t know what it was at first because it was so dark and I had no feeling in it, but I felt of it for a couple of minutes and realized that it was in fact my arm.

  25. Naleh says:

I sleep with a lot of blankets but not as many as Biff. O_o
I once had both of my feet fall asleep on me. Trying to walk with sleeping legs are not fun. And a bit dangerous. >.>

  26. Nils says:

My then-girlfriend once managed to wake up with both her arms asleep above her head (her blood circulation was pretty weak). What she did was, she jerked her body up to swing them both into another position, her arms swing around and consequentially punch her in the stomach, almost knocking her out. I couldn’t help but laugh.

  27. Trevor says:

I hope that lollipop isn’t stuck in one of thosse blankets.
    Ooooorrrrr….
WAKE UP BIFF! I made you some creal, and you don’t want to have it get soggy do you?

  28. Chaoser says:

Once my arm fell sleep and when i woke up i brought my other arm around and grabbed a hand but i thought it was someone elses hand cause i didnt feel it so the moment i felt it i instanly squeezed the crap out of it and started punching and pulling to get a small advantage on who ever it was that i thought was attacking me then when i pulled my body flung over and i realized it was my arm and it was asleep i was crackin up bad partly cause it wasnt someone and it was my arm and other partly cause my hand was asleep and i coulndt feel the pain of what i did to it lol…

  29. Trevor says:

    Sorry for the double post.
I sleep with a bunch of diffrent kinds of blankets, pillows even, I often roll over so they fall off, other times I just get too lazy to get all of thosse blankets on me, but since it’s probably not too far into the night when I go asleepp, it get’s too hot.

  30. Ben says:

I sleep in a way that I get numb legs.
I woke up one day, late for the bus and went running out of bed, I got most of the way across the room before my right leg gave out and I crashed into the half open door.
Unfortuently, numbness like pins and needles and local anesethic makes me feel really ill, so I can’t even enjoy it.

I love a cold winter, cos I can then have on a dozen blankets and feel that weight of them pushing down, it is somehow reassuring.
In summer, I like to sleep with only a breeze on, any blankets make me claustraphobic.

  31. Rakala says:

Usually when my arm falls asleep when I’m sleeping, I lift it straight into the air to get the blood flowing again. It’s actually a pretty neat feeling

  32. DAvid says:

For a while I had the ill fate of frequently sleeping on BOTH my arms so that they’d be numb and lifeless from the elbow down. You don’t know futility till you’ve had to turn off your wristwatch alarm with your teeth to make the noise go away first thing in the morning.

  33. Kevin L Nenstiel says:

I once slept with my arm up over my head and woke to find that my entire arm had fallen asleep. I picked it up with my remaining good arm to move it to a better position, but I was groggy and I had a weak grip. When I had my arm way up over me, halfway to its final position, I dropped it, and it slapped my girlfriend in the face. She was angry at the time, but we had a good laugh about it in the morning.

  34. Garrett says:

I find that when I load up on covers, I can’t get out of bed because the air outside the blankets is too cold to welcome me.

  35. Gman says:

This hasnt happened to me, but I once woke up with a headache and a huge bump on my head. A Baseball bat I had proped up against the side of my bed had fallen and struck me! I got rid of the bat after that

  36. Kit-Kun says:

I once woke up to pick up the phone, and I could not feel my hand or wrist! I ended up knocking over a glass of soda from the night before. I got the phone. I also have this habit of sitting a surtain way in school where my leg falls asleep. I HATE it. One more thing, ever notice that, even though the weird tingy feeling in your legs doesn’t hurt, you cring like it does?

  37. Colin says:

i have a habit of falling asleep in such a way, that i always wake up with a picasso-esque pattern on my arm.
    muscular cubism, yo.

  38. Radical Edward says:

I love blankets. In fact, my parents joke that I’m like the princess from “The Princess and The Pea” (I have delicate skin)

  39. Boo says:

It’s not fun having your whole body fall asleep on you, well that isn’t really the way it happens… Sleep Paralysis they call it. Your brain wakes up too quickly and the rest of your body is still gradually warming through the ascending stages of sleep. So for a few seconds you’re conscious but you have little to no motor control.

This happened to me once, I woke up one morning and heard this horrible growling sound. Not recognizing it as any sound made by any animal kept in the house I made to sit up and investigate. I found in my investigation that I was still laying down. With extreme pain of pins and needles I forced myself to sit up, and in doing so woke my body up, only to find out my stomach was making the alien growling sound because I wanted breakfast… imagine that.

They say Sleep Paralysis is a “symptom” of an alien abduction…

  40. Dan the Man says:

Every once in a while, I’ll wake up with a numb arm, and I’ll pick it up and gently thow it against my headboard until the blood starts flowing again. Though on occaision, I’ll wake up with a numb leg, and by the time I get out of bed, it already has pins and needles, and it’s too ticklish/painful/numb to walk on, which really bugs me.

  41. Itai says:

like most of you, i sleep in ways that make my limbs numb, one time i woke up, saw a glass of water on the stand that sits a lil higher than my bed, i went to grab it but to my surprise i kind of slapped the glass knocking it over all over myself, and my bed.. i no longer had the option of sleeping in at that point, because my bed became soggy n i was soaked.

  42. Tony says:

Once I woke up to turn off my alarm which was on the other side of my room, I fell cuz one of my legs was asleep. I tried again n fell again! Good thing nobody saw me fall. I swam on the floor with my arms to my alarm after that.

  43. Kaikuro says:

To avoid a problem like that, I got myself an electric blanket. Biff, I think you need to do the same. That is, if you ever get out of there.

  44. Elkian says:

    Not his head, tho.

  45. Elkian says:

Blankets are nice, but bed pads are where it’s at.

  46. Mike says:

Reminds me of one night where I slept on my hand, and come 6AM, I woke up to start my day. My hand was alseep, but my arm wasn’t. I got out of bed, turned on my monitor and went to go check my email before I realised that I couldn’t move the mouse right because my hand was asleep. I actually had to use both hands to move the mouse. It was annoying.

  47. BlueShoals says:

Ahh! I’ve had it happen before. Waking up paralyzed, completely unable to move anything for half-a-minute or so… Vocal cords not functioning either.
You kind of try to thrash your body awake for a bit, but you end up wasting your breath and have to recover before trying again.

Then, POP. You’re awake and you can move completely. It freaked me out the first time it happened. After that, I just go zen and try to calm down.

  48. Damon says:

omg i wake up paralyzed at night all the time and it scares me because i can look around but cant move anything at all and it happens alot when my face happens to be smuthered into my pillow and that scares me too because i think im gonna suffocate lol but yea what is it and does it happen to anyboy else???

  49. Laurel Raven says:

The comic reminds me of a time I spent the winter living in a very small camper with electricity, but no heat. There were a few times when the overnight low was in the tens, and windchill below zero. My solution? No, not an electric blanket, since the camper was also very old and I was worried about starting an electrical fire…I put eight layers of blanket over me at night, and after I adjusted just right I could even breathe without getting my nose cold.

Most comfortable night’s sleep, I swear. For obvious reasons, I didn’t want to get out of bed at 5:30 in the morning to get dressed and go to work…i wanted to stay in my little heat coccoon.

  50. Knofiman says:

Oftentimes when i stand up after sitting for too long a time my a… is asleep. The missing feeling is not the problem, but when it’s waking up again – believe me!

  51. Demiwolf says:

i’ve so far read up to this point in one sitting, and this is the first time i’ve actually laughed out loud. I really enjoy this comic and even more so the random little stories you leave beneath them.

  52. the beasley says:

i remember during summer school when i was in high school i had to be in class by 10am so i would wake up when my parents did to get ready for school while they go to work, i layed down on the floor after i was ready and fell asleep for an hour, when i woke up i panicked because i thought i had slept past 10 so i went to stand up real fast and immediately fell back to the floor because somehow i had slept in a possition that put my leg to sleep. good thing i woke up at 9.

  53. biggo says:

Amongst all the times I’ve had parts of my body sleeping on their own, I woke up one day in 2006 with half of my face not responding to commands. A number of doctors failed to understand what happened, the face woke up eventually, but my left ear is half-functional since, which sucks because I’m an audio professional. Just my luck eh?
Still, I’m laughing very hard for the 365th time in a row. I can’t believe I’m discovering Biff so late. Eat your liver out, oldtimers! We newbies are getting all the fun 😛

  54. Psymon says:

When I sit for long enough, the backs of my legs fall asleep.
When I am lying down, my arms get numb and sleep.
As I fall asleep, I can feel my body going numb.
But when I wake up, my whole body is awake.

I’m sure if I were better acquainted with cold weather,
I would have some numb-from-the-cold stories.
I am often surprised to learn that my hands and feet
are fairly well above room temperature.

  55. Marr965 says:

I’ve gone to sleep, had a nightmare, and woken up almost screaming before…

  56. Marr965 says:

Oh, yeah, I’ve also had one of those almost asleep dreams. Dreamt I was walking along a red brick road at one of my old schools, a football rolled in front of me, I kicked it, and my leg twitched in real life! Needless to say, it woke me up…

  57. Deteramot says:

If my arm falls asleep, when I wake up, I can’t move it, so I grab it, lift it and let go, to see how asleep it is. It tends to collapse across my body like there isn’t even bone in there. Then the pins and needles start.

  58. Alice Love says:

He should get a snuggy – those things warm me up and keep me hot through the night =)

  59. ThatSomethingGuy says:

In my Highschool Science class, we had stools that would often make one of my legs fall asleep. At the end of the class, I thought it was entertaining, trying to make my way out of the class when I couldn’t feel anything from my knee down. The best way I can describe it is walking on a cloud. Like, walking on solid air. It’s tricky, but entertaining.

  60. Led says:

Once I was woken up by the phone only to realize that both my arms and legs had fallen asleep. It was really hard to shuffle through 4 rooms, barely able to stand, and then try to pick up the phone with arms that were about as strong as noodles ^^

  61. Benzene the Scientist says:

wow, reading a years worth in one sitting is making my head hurt 😀

  62. Twigs says:

The first time that happened to me, I completely freaked out. I could see a hand on the pillow next to my head but couldn’t feel that it was mine. It took my brain about 30 seconds to figure out what had actually happened, and then I was scared because I thought my arm wouldn’t recover and would be dead for the rest of my life.

  63. Raven Gold says:

Yeah, I know that feelling. And you have keep floping and hittting at this unresponsive and seemingly dead thing and than once you get the feeling back, you move your arm in just the wrong position and compress the nerve, and you have to start over again.

  64. When i was 16 years old, i used to live on a 41 ft. morgan outisland. for the unedumacated out there, thats a sail boat. i lived rather far from the bus stop, as you can imagine. this comes into play when one morning i wake up to the sound of my alarm clock. i am one of those guys that can NOT wake up to those, so i have to set it like an hour early. i look at the clock and realized i had 10 minutes to get dressed and run the 3 blacks to the bus stop.as i looked to the left at the clock, someone slapped the shit out of my face. HARD! The right side of my face had a handprint for hours. i thought my mom got mad at me for being late and slapped me! then, when i turned to the right to see why she had done so, some one slapped me AGAIN! this time on the right side of my face. thouroughly discombobulated, i tried to get up and failed miserably, thats when i realized, i had slapped myself! apparently i went to sleep with both arms behind my head, and when i moved, they just somehow slammed down on my face. you ever try to put pants on with NO ARMS?!? It’s friekin hilarious to imagine now, but at the time it was so frustrating i almost cried. if i was late to school one more time i would get expelled. and the NEEDLES! OH GOD THE AGONY! Needless to say, i have never slept with my arms behind my head, ever again.

  65. ThunderBunny says:

Used to happen to me all the time, because I sleep on my stomach with my arm under my pillow. Two small teddy bears on either side of my arm solved the problem! 🙂

  66. Gotora says:

I actually enjoy the experience. I find I can use my shoulder to flop my arm around a little, and since I enjoy the experience, I’ll flop my hand onto my face or chest and try as hard as I can to move it, that way I can feel how much I can move it as soon as it gets blood again. Its always weaker for like ten minutes, though… go figure.

  67. Voyager says:

I used to sleep with my head on my hands. Then one night I woke up an couldn’t feel my hands. That really freaked me out until they started to wake back up again, and I figured out what was going on.
