When I moved to Boston my Dad and brother drove out there with me to help move boxes. We found a little diner by my apartment to have lunch and my brother got a tuna melt. He really liked the taste of the white cheese that was on it. When the server came by he asked her what kind of cheese it was. “American cheese.” She said. We were confused. American cheese was always orange every place we had ever been. The next day we went to the cheese section of the grocery store and sure enough all the American cheese was white. I found lots of funny little regional things like that from moving across the country.

Huh. I’ve never heard of white American cheese. Then again, I’ve never really been clear on what exactly makes cheese American anyway.

Is that Biff’s kitchen in the background? A yellow kitchen probably means bad things for him, or really…anyone.
Also, we have both white and yellow (orangey) American cheeses here. Mostly yellow though.
I think you get white cheese by not letting it age as much, or something like that. Or it could have been mozzarella 😛

Actually, American cheese used to be made of a blend of Colby and something cheese, Jack I think. It’s not really cheese anymore, or at least, the American cheese we think of when saying American cheese isn’t. I think it’s called a processed cheese food now, a blend of actual cheese and other dairy products.
Oh good, Biff finally realized something NOT bad and/or painful, but instead delicioius!
Just a random thought, but you wanna hear something messed up? We have American cheese.

I have to concur on one thing, it’s nice for see god ol’ Biff learn a lesson painlessly once and again. Of coarse instead of terminates he’s going to have one helluva mouse problem, but let’s not ruin the moment thinking about that.
As I recall, Biff’s couch has been known to eat people, so this begs the question “Can Biff’s house eat itself?”
2 things:
1) Colby Jack (or Cheddar Jack) is not the same as American.
2) Subway’s American Cheese is typically of the white variety in all the regions I’ve ever visited.

He is not sad, Brad, but in quiet contemplation of the deliciousness he has discovered.
Sliced processed cheez food product tends to shrivel and warp as it dries… soon he will need to re-tile his kitchen.
That’s when he’ll realize that dried processed cheez food product has some of the same properties as bondo.
American cheese is orange out here in SD – except, as one poster said, at Subway…
why would someone call a cheese after the Country it came from? i can understand if they call it after the town or village it came from (Wensleydale cheese =p ), but it seems kinda weird to name it after a country.

cheeeeezaaaaaaah! as a Wisconsinite, i hold all cheese to equal…except for the smelly cheese…american cheese has always been white in color. I don’t know why the orange cheese would sometimes be called american…maybe kraft did it.
Here in England cheese is plentiful, it tastes amazng. So many different varieties.

BTW, Mr. Awesome makes cheese as a hobby. Cheese is orange because they dye it that colour. Scary, eh?

I was behind the mother of two toddlers who was buying both colors. The Deli Guy asked her if she knew they were the same, only one had food coloring. She knew, and commented that he obviously didn’t know much about the food preferences of little kids – one would only eat white cheese, the other yellow.
Around where I live the color of American is whitee… cheddar or velveeta cheese is the orange ones… unless i might have seen orange American, but I dont think so.
Mmmm, American cheese. And mmmm Subway, where the American cheese is white but tastes just as wonderful.

I’ve heard that all cheese is naturally white (not counting mold,) but certain kinds are sometimes colored yellow for aesthetic reasons. So for me, some kinds of white cheese seems less “gimmiky” than yellow cheese.
He’s probably wondering why he didn’t make more sandwiches with it instead of using them for tiles.

Hmm… at my grocery store we have a choice of white American or yellow American… must be a New England thing.

Orange Cheese? Yellow Cheese? Cheese is white… ok, different kinds of yellowish white 🙂
And naming a Cheese after a Continent is funny. Here most of the cheeses are named after villages or at least regions.
Ok, you can get this slived, packaged cheese to at some places, but I would not really call this cheese anymore 🙂

I’m glad I live in the United Kingdom of Great Britainland, where cheese is plentiful and diverse.
Seriously Americans, go on the Sainsbury’s website or something, if only to see what you are missing…
American cheese isn’t the only cheese in America. It just happens to be the best cheese for the cheeseburger, in my opinion anyway. Here in the states we have variations of cheese, it’s mostly that the average consumer is happy with American, Cheddar, Swiss, and perhaps a few others.

Interesting fact.
The white/yellow coloring goes back to the few years before the Revolutionary War.
The cheese that England imported was white in color.
So, American colonists began to color their cheese yellow.
That way other American’s would know to buy the yellow cheese, instead of the white cheese which would just give England the profit.

Is this some kind of competition between America and England, a battle fought only with cheese? I’m getting that distinct impression. That has to be one of the most senseless things to compete about I’ve ever heard.
So if British cheese is so much better than American cheese, has anybody on the other side of the pond ever tiled a wall with Wensley Dale? Gorgonzola? Limburger? American cheese is the only cheese with the industrial tensile strength required for construction jobs. Eat that, you Limeys!
i hate cheese. i dont care wat color it is, but to me, its all nasty. i love milk though… weird…
No-one would tile a wall with British cheese because it’s far to good for that. Also, while we’re on the subject of senseless battles, our cars are better too…

This is America – We have immigrants from literally every nation on the planet, and they *all* want the taste of home. If there’s a cheese produced and sold commercially anywhere in the world, we have it. If we don’t produce a domestic version of it, we import it. We even have a grey market in Mexican farmer’s cheese – mom-n-pop cheese makers selling their home-made product at flea markets and farmer’s markets. I can get more different kinds of cheese from the local grocery stores than you can shake a stick at, and they’re not even specialty shops!
Here in Los Angeles, we have both white and yellow/orange american cheese. I usually only see the white kinds at restaurants…or subway
I live in Boston and i had a similar experience visiting chicago, i was used to white american cheese my WHOLE life and while going to chicago we stopped at a restaurant and i got a sandwich that was made with orange cheese, and i didnt understand what she said when it was american, then we went to a supermarket and all became clear.
I live in Minnesota, both in the southern part and right by ND (oh the college life…) anyway, all the American cheese I have ever known has been white
I grew up with american cheese being white. The only orange cheese I knew of was cheddar.
we carry both white and yellow at the the deli where i work in North Carolina. I don’t see the difference, but i don’t eat much America chease.

As a deli worker, the fact that there’s both white and yellow American annoys me to no end. Some customers seem to have gotten it into their mind that white is somehow fancier and superior to yellow American cheese. One time we were out of white and a customer asked for it. I told her we didn’t have any more and that we did have yellow, they were pretty much the same and she could sample it if she wanted to. She acted like I insulted her mother. She began lecturing me about how she would never buy yellow because it was disgusting. I was just like “okay, whatever lady. I don’t care that much about your cheese problems.” On the flipside, we have the parents who only want the yellow American cheese because their little brats won’t eat anything else and heaven forbid they force precious junior to eat something that isn’t a color he approves of! Yes, I’m cranky. 😛 You would be too if you had to deal with this every day.
Someone slapped a cheese slice to the wall in the janitor’s room at my workplace. It had turned into plactic by the time I found it…
I hate the term “American Cheese.” It’s not actually cheese, it’s process cheese. I really dislike that we would call this weak imitation cheese byproduct as American; its demeaning to our nation.
