#345 – Circular

My buddy is coming over in the next week or two to help build some storage shelves in my basement. We’re hoping to avoid any Biff-like power tool situations. Anyone else have a home improvement project they are working on?

  1. MoosePhysh says:

No home improvement projects as of now, but various side projects that involve much soldering and breathing in of solder. Unfortunately, the power tools part of this side project got relegated to another…probably a good thing.

  2. P. Speed says:

    Perpetually.

General rule: It’s a good project if it can be used as an excuse for at least one new tool.

  3. Garrett says:

At least the cord was cut before any more damage could be done, to the house OR him.
    Talk about cuttin’ a rug!

  4. CojoinedCows says:

I just moved into a new appartment with some friends. Now I need to build a shelf which fits into my new room. Shouldn’t be easy, since I’m living directly under the roof. 🙂

  5. LazerWulf says:

I’m a college student living in a house with 6 other guys. We were a few beds short, so one of the guys in the house built a lofted bed out of $60 worth of lumber and plywood.

I honestly never thought I could get motion sickness from a bed.

  6. Alistair - UK says:

Yeah atm we’re redoing our bathroom. i’ve already broken some plasterboard ans dropped the hammer on my foot >.

  7. Bryce says:

Hey, glad I fanally caught up, funny stuff Chris, reminds me the time when Biff tested a socket like a battery.

  8. Adam_Y says:

Pimp my vacuum cleaner, biff style. I like it.

I put up a flat-pack desk last night with no instructions. Woke up this morning to find it had reverted to the ‘flat’ stage again.

  9. dragonbrad says:

well at my house its constant home improvements. Because the wackos that screwed up the whole house when they built.

  10. Jace says:

I don’t do big projects, but I’m a miniature painter, and part of painting them, is preparing them to be painted, which means building them, I really enjoy converting things and modeling my own stuff, and sometimes I’ll go months not painting a thing while I work on building random contraptions. I’ve had some pretty odd mishaps, and lemme tell you, blood doesn’t stop you from building that idea you had.

  11. Goggledegook says:

    That’s one way to install a fireman’s pole…
I once tried to make a functional stepstool out of legos; it worked until my rather large friend tried to use it. He actually damaged several of the pieces to the point that they had to be thrown away.

  12. Ben says:

I am the man when it comes to home repair and building.
But then it was my business.
    Unfortuently, accidents are not funny.
Except years later, when you forget how scary it is to hold a guy when he is tangled in live high power cables that are cut and torn and he has just fallen 5mtrs after tripping on a roof, while you wait for help to arrive.
Or, when you forget how bad it was to provide first aid to a guy whose neck was almost broken, who is out cold and not breathing.

And the stupid kind of accident that Biff had here, is scarily common.
Like once a week at my old work.

    But still I laughed.

  13. BillAtAllen says:

    Can I borrow that!?!
We are putting Sheetrock into the basement next weekend. The stairway is too narrow and there is no other access, so we are cutting a hole in the upstairs floor to drop it all down. Biff’s vaccuum would be just the thing.
BTW – Where does Biff live so I can pick it up?

    Great stuff!

  14. Seraphine says:

Biff’s idea is sound in theory. Having no
floor is cleaner than having a dirty floor.
The trick, of course, is to evenly apply the
saw-blades, and to be mindful of the cord.

  15. Ela says:

    Awesome!!!

  16. kenshin620 says:

Soooo what the hell was biff thinking this time?

  17. Jason says:

Reminds me of working the scene shop at the university with my dad.

Have several HIPs in planning, including redoing the downstairs bathroom, building a second floor deck and repairing the floor joists.

  18. Shiloh says:

I live in a dorm, but I’m in theatre so I get to build sets. The scariest moment in my life was when we were hanging flats. Now, if you don’t know what a flat is, it’s a big piece of wood held together by 1x4s or something like that. Anyways, they’re about 8 feet tall by 4 feet wide…something like that. So, the “smaller” flat has 4 flats side by side and two on the sides attached at the top. We hang it to the fly system by wires. It took four big guys to lift it and we had to put more weights on it. I was the only one standing by it, so I was pretty sure I was going to die.

The bigger one is twice that size and it took about 6 guys to pull it up, and when they put the brake on so they could take a rest, it didn’t stop it ’cause it was too heavy. The girls were in charge of grabbing weights so they could hold it so it wouldn’t come crashing down. We finally got it all done and no injuries except for rope burn on some guys.

  19. Kanki-chan says:

I don’t have any home improvement projects, but my Dad on the other hand is big on getting drywall up for the basement. A couple of years back he and I would spend every Saturday morning building houses.

…I’m surprised that the houses passed regulations, although the number of nails I destroyed probably made up for it.

  20. JJ says:

Well, I haven’t done anything in a while, but usually, when my parents get Ikea furniture, I’m the one who builds it (since I enjoy it). Perhaps an angry/deformed Ikea product attacking Biff.

  21. Joanassie says:

I actually tried building an arcade booth to play my old games, but it will be a while before I can buy the lumber.

  22. Looking on the bright side, it clears the saw dust up .

  23. AG says:

I’m currently working on converting my bedroom into an art studio. Over time I’ve amassed so much matboard that I no longer have any place to store it all so a rack for thats the first thing on the list. After that my dad and I are going to knock out a wall into an adjacent closet to make room for my computer so I don’t have to trek all the way to the basement every time I want to use photoshop or upload a comic page.

  24. Chuck says:

My sister was living with me in my room while my stepdad fixed up her room. Now that it’s done, I’m living with my sister in her room while my stepdad fixes up mine.

  25. Lawless says:

Well my house is being re-wired next sunday, and the celing in my bedroom needs changn b4 xmas whoopeeeeeeeeeeee. not lets just hope i dont have any biff moments re-wiring the house ^^

  26. Guairdean says:

I just finished some work on my workroom/home office. I replaced the closet doors (double folding doors) with bookshelves that swing out revealing the hidden space behind them. I also added workbenches on two walls. Now my wife wants to redo the bedroom.

  27. Hiei Umbra says:

We don’t have any current projects we’re working on at the moment, but a month or two ago, I helped my dad side the house. None of us got hurt other then a few scrapes, small cuts, and a larger cut my dad attained while replacing the gutters. He went to lower theater old gutter and it slipped, cutting through his glove and a bit into his hand.

  28. Aryn says:

First time poster. Woo. Anyways..My parents are planning in the near future on expanding my bedroom…Which means I’ll get kicked out of my room for an unknown amount of time, be sleeping..somewhere unknown..And have my computer in the living room/kitchen. I see staying up late suddenly stopped during that time period.

I plan on passwording my computer to prevent prying eyes from snooping.

  29. MaskedMan says:

No projects at the moment, but I did help save my mother’s house from the drunken monkeys on crack that had wired it, not too far past. Well, I *used* to think her place had been wired by crack-smoking drunken monkeys, but now I wonder if maybe Biff had a hand in there, somewhere…

As a (former) electrician, it was a moment of spinechilling fear when I saw was was concealed beneath the drywall. I’m talking about things like lightweight extention cords strung together in daisey chains behind the drywall to power lighting, and other horrors of that nature.

  30. Radical Edward says:

Biff realizes the dangers of modifying housewares.

  31. Radical Edward says:

Especially since the floor should have fallen below him…

  32. Elkian says:

I love making useless machines. I once made this elaborate machine to pour sugar into my juice cause I was bored. It worked too. 😛

  38. steve says:

Biff! What the hell were you thinkin!?

  39. -2! says:

And he only stopped because the cord got cut

  40. SurveySays says:

    -2! u are definatly right.

You know when you start living by yourself and you do things you never could get away with otherwise? and some things you can’t do cause you can hear your parents yelling at you in your head? i cringed when i saw the cord cause i heard my mother’s voice. ‘what on earth are you thinking??! pick UP the cord! pick it up! you don’t just run it over like that. jeez.” this is generally accompanied with a smack to the back of the head…

  41. Marscaleb says:

This one made me laugh out loud.

    Why, Biff? Why?
