#287 – Dive

I loved going to the public pool when I was a kid. It was a great place to go for a few hours during those long hot summer breaks from school. There was a hot dog place across the street that I would go to for lunch but all I would buy was a bag of french fries. The best french fries I’ve ever had and probably ever will have. Freshly cut moments before being cooked. Served in a brown paper lunch bag. Sadly that place has been gone for almost 20 years now. I’m sure I’ll never find a place to live up to my memory of what those fries were like when I was a kid.

Thanks to everyone that has ordered a book so far. Germany is Biff’s #1 international destination so far. I’m surprised that I’ve only gotten a single order from the UK so far. It will be interesting to see how many states are spoken for by the time the preorder period is over. Maybe I can make some sort of map of Biff’s travels. 🙂 You can preorder your copy here.

Where I live, the best public pool is about 45 minutes away in a different town, and it’s a town with about 1/15 the population of the one I live in. Why they get the cool pool with the platforms and waterslides, and we end up with the “aquatic recreation center” is beyond me. But I often wonder about unlikely combinations of two usually normal means of recreation. Like rollerblades and tennis….that’d be fun.

  2. Synchro says:

In & Out Burger makes their fries fresh, though I’m not sure how they’d compare to your memories of the hot dog stand. Why not get a deep fryer and make fries on your own whenever you want to?

…. That’s what we did. XD

  3. Seraphine says:

If Biff had attached french fries to his legs instead of stilts, the diving board accident wouldn’t have happened.
But then twenty years later, who will have remembered?

  4. Macabelle says:

I actually used to be a lifeguard, and whenever the people were gone, we woudl jump off of those giant chairs into the 9ft. section. However, one day one of us slipped and fell headfirst onto the pavement (Just like biff) the end result was that they got fired while the rest of us admitted to nothing.

    I admit nothing!

  5. Macabelle says:

Oh, and congratulations on the book doing so well.

  6. Elli says:

I’m gonna miss the local pool if I move. It’s a huge, indoor wave pool. with two seperate slides, a hot tub, a kiddie pool, and two outside pools, one with diving boards, one without.

They have a concession stand there that serves chocolate chip cookies the size of saucers.

  7. Congratulations on making me laugh on this awful day too. Thank you.

  8. Chris says:

Thanks Lord Klingsor, I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

  9. 3686 says:

Keep up the good work. I think I was the only orderer from the UK.

    Alex

  10. Chris says:

Thanks Alex! Maybe today will be the day I get the rush of UK orders. 🙂

  11. Dawnie says:

Chris, if you’re ever in the Chicago area, there is a local hot dog stand called Gene & Jude’s. They slice up an entire peeled potato and throw it into the grease just like that. It might not be exactly like your childhood memories, but it might be similar enough to make you smile again.

  12. Chris says:

Where in Chicago? I live in the Chicago suburbs.

  13. Roy_vf1s says:

Chris, you reminded me of how great my town’s public pool was in its heyday. The concession stand inside the fence was always serving up cotton candy and other ‘summer food;’ The french fries were just industrial bags of Oreida crinkle cut fries, but somehow those were always the best fries after a long swim.

Oh, and if you’re considering making a map of the people who have pre-ordered the book, you could try using Frappr.

  14. Robert says:

Heh, this comic just gives me one of these “why in the world” feelings…:P

  15. Kintar says:

Why in the world? Because the diving board wasn’t high enough, obviously! (Should I worry that most of the things Biff does make perfect sense to me? *LOL*)

BTW, Chris; I just found the site on Monday, and I wasted a good two hours of otherwise productive time at work reading every single comic. I’m in love. 😉 (With the comic, not with you. Sorry.)

  16. Chris says:

Thanks Kintar, I’m happy to be a distraction.

  17. AG says:

Man, that makes me wish I had a pool nearby. The area I live in, the public pool costs something like $200 to use for the season, and pretty much the only other place to swim is the Mississippi river and anyone who’s seen that river knows it’s not a place you want to go swimming. Lots of giant catfish to get eaten by. Almost seems like something biff would do, go swimming in the river and get eaten.

  18. hmm… maybe rubber stilts would have helped…

  19. AwesomeAud says:

Hey! Biff without his green tennis shoes!

  20. Madness says:

Dang, I just gotta preorder the book.

  21. Garrett says:

This looks like what Dawnie was talking about.

    2720 N. River Rd.
    River Grove, IL

Doesn’t look like they have crinkle-cut fries, though. Crinkle-cut is my favorite, and Braum’s(large chain) is the only place I’ve seen them at. I feel like going to Braum’s now, just for fries.

  22. Jameson says:

Well, that will happen when you wear your stilts on a diving board. I’m not gonna lie.

  23. Miranda says:

The closest pool to my house growing up had a petting zoo attached to it. The pool was over a spring so the owner used this water to fill it. The government forced him to shut it down because it turned out he refused to use chlorine. I still miss going there.

  24. Tinned Moron says:

I never learned how to swim, and no matter how many times I nearly drown, I never will. Ever.

  25. Froz'n Peas says:

Everyone that pre-ordered the book should add themselves to here!

  26. dragonbrad says:

there is a place thats twenty minutes from me that has some micro wave burritos and nachos , thats arent very good but were its located is awesome next to the water , a park, and a bait shop.

i am sensing that he needs a new face.

  27. Zelly_Fangirl says:

i was going to say something about the lack of logic in Biff’s idea, but this is Biff we’re talking about. he might as well be illogic inarnated.

  28. mulitipleannurisims says:

    Biff, YOU ARE MY HERO.

  29. NoDice says:

for the last 6 consecutive comics, there’s been a small puffy cloud in the left corner of every frame. is this coincidence?
or is it ‘small puffy cloud in the left corner of the frame’ week?

  30. Taz says:

    I can only say “Ow.”

  31. bizzybody says:

  32. Jaz says:

  33. joequincy says:

    That’s what In ‘N’ Out is for…
they make their fries from freshly cut potatoes right in front of you

  34. Elkian says:

How did he get UP there?!

  35. Lesley says:

On Grand Ave and York Rd right on the border between Elmhurst and Bensenville there is a branch if Scooby’s red Hots that makes the best fries around here right now. They cut them, fry them, and give them to you. Its fantastic. And if you get the special of the day, it comes with the fries for free.

  36. Chris says:

@Lesley – I love that place! Those fries really are close to the ones I described above. I even love eating leftover cold fries the next day. They are just so good.

  37. Marr965 says:

BEST chips I’ve ever had… Mmmmm… Had them in Austria, on a school ski trip. Thin, crispy, hot, salty, and they went really well with tomato ketchup… Mmmm… My mouth is watering thinking about them…

  38. BrainpanSonata says:

I think I had the best fries in the world a few days ago… unfortunately, it was at a local family-run restaurant that was closing that very day due to the economy.
