#228 – Seat

Back in college I bought the new CD “Undertow” by the band Tool and got into bed to listen to it through my big fancy headphones. As the album ended, the sun set and I fell asleep. Well the album didn’t actually end after the last song. While I slept, the CD player kept playing, going through a bunch of silent tracks. Then suddenly, the “secret” track came on. It blasted through my headphones and I awoke to a completely dark room, confused and frightened. It took me a moment to remember where I was and to figure out that I was wearing headphones. That CD has scared me ever since.

Dude. I finally caught up with the comic. It is so awesome. I love your comics. and Chris is my name also.

  4. Your_mom says:

    Dude I feel for ya… I really do…

  5. Pickleduck McWeaselpants says:

Holy crap, I can relate to that experience. Replace “sleep” with “deep focus on homework” and “Undertow by Tool” with…I could swear it was a Five Iron Frenzy album, one of the later ones, and you have my experience. Yeah, I’m still a little apprehensive about leaving those on if I can’t be focused on the music itself.

  6. Phantom says:

I know how you feel Chris, one time I was in Mexico and i was dreaming about home and all of the sudden I woke up and I have no freaking clue where I was or how I got there…it was freaky.

THIS IS NECESSARY….THIS IS NECESSARY….LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE

    Tool is awesome though.

So I’ve been reading for awhile and decided this was the best one to comment on. but I have to say, Undertow did the same thing to me. Drifted off to sleep after the “last” track only to be awoken in sheer terror by the secret track. Haven’t Listened to it to just relax since. I get to tense as the end draws near.

  9. Basarin says:

While I can’t exactly say I can relate to that particular experience…just what WAS Biff planning to escape FROM with an ejection seat on the comfy chair?

  10. Siddnet says:

Maybe he can escape when the stale pizza armed delivery men attack?

  11. Ceiling Cat says:

Maybe it’s just there so he can get to his bedroom with minimal effort. Or the bathroom if he has the runs…hm…

    Love the comic!

  12. Oh no the ceiling ate him again!

  13. Rick says:

Maybe to escape from Iahova witnessess

  14. dragonbrad says:

thats the same chair he was using when he ate chips and exercised with if you dont bvelieve me check

  15. Reikon Ame says:

    The names, Biff, just Biff.

  16. TKort says:

    Tool rocks :).

  17. Cudzu says:

He’s in the ceiling again. *sigh*

  18. ning says:

TOOOOOOL!! I did the same thing on the secret song at the end of Opiate, but I love it even more now. “I had a friend once, he took some ecstacy, now he thinks he’s a fire hydrant.”

  19. Scipo says:

“Toxicity” cd by System of a Down… There’s kind of a little pause before Chop Suey and if you turn your car stereo off right before that song and forget to turn the volume down, you’re in for a surprise when you turn the car back on again. Also noticed that you finally got a little bookmark avatar. I have a bunch of web comics bookmarked and it always bugged me to have that gap of two or three comics with the standard bookmark logo. Keep up the awesome work!

  20. Andrew says:

Rocket powered as opposed to pneumatic pressure for an escape. I wouldn’t recommend that for inside if you are making an ejection seat. Think of the cost of repairs.

  21. Lsharp says:

    I loveeeee TOOL!!!
i’ve seen ‘m live, i’ve waited for 5 hours after there prefomance but no secret track for me 🙁

  22. Madness says:

Thats happened to me twice. The music, I mean.

  23. Cece says:

Undertow is interesting like that, making you fall out of your chair, theres another song by them, disgustipated, that is really long and starts off as a normal song… then that song ends and a bunch of cricket noises start. After like 10 minutes of cricket noises theres a voice saying something. If you ever listen to that song late at night and have the volume level low enough so you can barely hear the crickets the voice at the end will literally make you jump up and try to find weapons to kill whomever is in your room.

  24. Odd Imp says:

Try listening to Ions with headphones – it sounds like the lightning is buzzing AROUND your head!!
I figured this out in a dark room… at 3 AM…. it still gives me the creeps 🙂

  25. Dynasty says:

jack off jill, most of their albums have a secret track which does that to me

hmm Cece, whats the album called? il try and look out for it

  26. Awkward As Usual says:

The thing with the music has happened to me a good number of times…I definitely feel for you…

oh, and I love the comic, it totally rocks…

  27. Lorinc Del Motte says:

Chris, may I recommend against selling your original comics? I mean, what if you need to re-scan them for a book?

  28. Chris says:

Lorinc Del Motte – Don’t worry, I’m selling comic BOOKS, not the original art for the Biff comics. 🙂

  29. Jenna says:

I hate hidden tracks. I really do.

Yet a lot of bands seem to think that they’re cool…

  30. Garrett says:

When the secret track has the space as PART OF that track, rather than as a separate track from the secret track, it makes it hard to go straight to the secret track, because you go to the track, then you have to fast forward through the space to get to the secret song! I’m thinking of a Gorillaz CD. That song is very cool, but you have to mush through the space to get to it.

  31. Jetman123 says:

FOX 3! EJECT, EJECT, EJECT! MAYD-dammit, Biff, for the last time, you are NOT FLYING AN F-16. You’re in your living room. No, you’re not flying that.

DO NOT PRESS THE EJECTOR SEAT BUTTON, BIFF. DON’T, DON’T YOU DARE, DON’T-… sigh.

  32. Ike says:

That happened to me once when I was listening to a New Found Glory CD at probably 2am. The setup is that my stereo is at my back when I’m at the computer and I had the CD running in it, so when I thought the CD had ended I just left it and the hidden track came up. It scared the ever loving crap out of me when I heard from behind me “THERE’S SOMEONE IN YOUR HOUSE”. Buh.

  33. Nova Namina Riff says:

I had a similar experience, apart from I was awake. I think my chair kinda simulated an ejector seat then.

  34. Wolfie says:

Lmao. Oh, I so want one of those chairs.

    …Perhaps for the patio, though.

  35. Radical Edward says:

What is it with Biff and his James Bond-styled housewares?

  36. Rachel says:

    that makes sense

  37. Ben says:

Undertow was my first Tool CD as well.
My friends had all known about tool for along time before me, but I was the first one to find that track.
I have always felt bad about carrots since.
But atleast red isn’t my colour now.

  38. Darkpheonix XIII says:

All my CD’s are burned, so no secret tracks for me. My only problem is when I’m listening to one to fall a sleep, and it’s at a low volume, then there is a really loud song. Fell out of bed once because of that…

  39. Kamorth says:

Gotta love how they do that.

This reminded me of one of my mother’s favourite stories. She’d been fighting with me and my two younger brothers.. I was about 12 so they would have been 7 and 8? She sent us all to bed and told us to leave her alone. Then she turned the stereo up to full volume and plugged in the headphones, turned all the lights off and stretched out on a lay-z-boy and started to listen to Fleetwood Mac. All would have been fine if my youngest brother hadn’t gone out to ask her something. He walked up very carefully, scared of being told off again , and she had her eyes closed. When she opened them, his face was right above hers. I still remember the screams from both of them. Almost 13 years ago, but still gets brought up as often as we can squeeze it into conversation.

  40. joequincy says:

The worst part is that it’s got a man ranting about how carrots have souls and we should save them… as if it were a religious sermon.

  41. the Scarf says:

something like that happened to me with my “Our Lady Peace” album…I had only heard most of it, and loved it, so I was listening to it as I was falling asleep. Fifteen minutes after the last song ends, there is a hidden track. Not music. Its a conversation between these two people. Its actually a very cool conversation, but theres all this white noise, and the voice of one of them ( I think ‘mary’) was very strange, because she was an android…and the other one was wierd because….because….

I woke up in the middle of the night because of really weird voices in my room….IT WAS FRIGGIN SCARY.

  42. Elkian says:

Is that the button on the table?

  43. Grand Duke Thomson the Nothingth says:

    I do love Tool.

    They’re just awesome.

But being in England I don’t get the gap of about sixty silent tracks between Flood and Disgustipated.

Which makes for a great deal of convenience when ripping it onto a computer.

    Great comics, by the way.

  44. Arjan says:

had the same thing with Nirvana’s Nevermind…- the headphones..but from a stereo it was also darn creepy.

  45. the walrus says:

No secret tracks for me, sigh.

  46. Soltueur says:

Could be worse. That could have been an ejection seat on the toilet, and then he’d be hanging from the ceiling with his pants down…

  47. Caboose says:

I love that album. The last song is just plain weird though.

  48. Pix says:

Hey, I have a chair that does that, it’s kinda useless
