#214 – Stare

Chapter: Comics
I find staring at ceilings to be very meditative. My mind will form shapes out of the grain of the paint. If I look for long enough I start to see movement and get the sensation of flying. Cheap entertainment when you are lying in bed with the flu.

I generate the same feeling by spinning really fast before crashing back into a couch. 😀
that’s so much fun, I used to do that all the time in junior high. it gives you such a rush, then I got older and I discovered the wonders of alcohol =D the room can spin even when you’re sitting still (dont worry always in moderation 😀 )
I used to stare at the ceiling when I was little. After a while, it would appear to bulge at the center and I would get scared, thinking the ceiling might collapse. D:
This reminds me of those Half-Life ceiling monsters,They drop their tongue and grab you to the ceiling.
LB: And that reminds me of Floormasters from Zelda games.
Damn those things made me mad, making me go way back in the dungeon (or in Wind Waker, stealing my partner)
I think your blogish entries at the bottom of each panel are great! you should add them to all the Book of Biff panels!
thats why I have wooden ceilings….(/_-)
Those drop ceilings they put in elementary schools have lots of good grains and water damage stains to make monsters out of.
Maybe he got eaten by a Wallmaster (OOT ref. omg!)
Well crap I didnt see cyber95’s msg… darn
Yeah, I usually try to find the pattern in ceiling tiles. Try to figure out how the tiles next to it are rotated.
Whenever I ceiling-gaze, I end up finding a bust of Beethoven in the patterns, no matter whose ceiling I’m looking at… I always knew there was something suspicious about his symphonies…
brain hurt, thats probobly whats go ing through biffs(extremely small) brain right now
I want to be eaten by the ceiling 🙂
It would make life so much more fun.
Maybe I’ll go home today and name my ceiling.
I mean it looks like it has a mouth.
Where it will just open and Ahhhhhhh!
I’m gone.
Strange , I never made it to the ceiling. I allways stare at a point in space exactly 12 inches in front of my nose.
Its a trick I learned from my old cat.
A useful trick if you want to reach a sufficient level of medetive insanity.
…..and then draw cartoons.
Man I cannot count the times I would be in elementary school and just be stareing up at the ceiling during one of my many ADD destrations and just imagine being eaten by the trolls that lived in the ceiling.
more need to follow biff’s lead
I’ve done that many, many times.
Gotta love those popcorn ceilings. I love finding images in them.
“anon.”: I’m not slammin’ booze, but when you’re cash-poor (like me) you can get buzzed cheaper by spinning unitl you fall – or just hyperventilatiing until your face goes numb. I can make origami toys that spin when you blow across them – they’re a cheap way to entertain others as you get high from the excess oxygen.

“Chris”: most tiles that have a “grain”-pattern (if installed by pros) will alternate “North-South” with “East-West” in a “checkerboard” fashion – both on the ceiling & with linoleum floor-tiles as well.

For those who need their “Rorschach Ink-Blots” to have a bit more animation in them, I recommend tuning your TV to a “non-channel”, so you can stare at the “snow” & imagine some sort of Order in the Chaos. Very soothing…
…Zzzzzzzzzz-z-z-z-z-z…
I couldnt stare at my ceiling. It’s made from that sort of plaster of paris made into little spikes. Staring at it only makes me raise the question of “Would I get skewered first if the ceiling colapsed”
Staring up at the ceiling can be pretty fun, especiallly when said ceiling has a very weird, uneven grain to it. I think I traced out a map of Africa on my ceiling once… And yeah, I think I had the flu that time, too 😉
I hate popcorn ceilings… they dont taste good at all..
I love your comics. I’ve been reading them since September. Keep it up.
for people who have office chairs(the on es that spin) try spinnin whil lookin at the ceiling, its like the ceiling calls gravity to take you down
Anger not the ceiling, for it shall grow angry and nosh on your skull!
Seriously, on Magdalena’s topic of ceiling skewerings, those kinds of ceilings are sharp. This was discovered when a bunkbed was placed in a room with that kind of ceiling…a low that kind of ceiling. Many back scratchings of a bad variety resulted.
The last time I stared at my ceiling, it was 4 am and I was pretty messed up from inking comic book pages all night so I got the idea to get out a pencil a draw a 6 foot tall rabbit tripped out on carrots leading a parade of little creatures across the ceiling.
The next morning, my family found it and decided that it was so funny that they should ink the image. I’ve moved since then, but as far as I know, the rabbit is still there.
Oh noes, the ceiling is unhappy!
Great one!
If you stare at ANYTHING for too long it will get angry…
i noticed the other day that a smiley face is dented into my ceiling. how cool is that
I used to try and count the little Styrofoam balls on the roof at home, or the weird holes in the roof tiles at school.
Yes, my walls have this texturing thing to them, and while my games are loading, i could form entire scenes from the little dents and blob thingys, then my games load, and i forget. when i was little, we had a bunkbed, and the room i slept in didnt have a roof light, so we got permission to use what glow in the dark paint we could use, we diluted it in water i think, dipped it in toothbrushes, old ones used for some art projects, and rubbed the brushes flicking the glow in the dark liquid onto the roof, do it in a pattern, and youd get galaxies, it looked awesome for the 3 years we lived there, everynight, thousands of little green dots on the celing.
My old middle school carpool had this really old van with a dotted pattern on the ceiling. The girl that I rode with told me that one time she stared at it for about half an hour and when she came home she turned into a lion. I was curious, so I did the same thing, and I started acting wolf-like for a couple of hours when I got home. That thing was hypnotic, morphing our minds to that of wildlife instincts. It was crazy, but fun. I never did it again after that though. It’s not fun when your sister decides to play wildlife hunter on the same day you turn into an animal.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of Floormasters…
I sort of do the same thing with the leaves of my favorite tree. I’ll be hangin’ out on this really nice branch (you can lie down on it, and part is exactly perfect for a pillow) and watching the sky through the leaves, and I feel just like a bird.
I’ve counted the holes in those cheep coporate ceiling type things in really boring classes. After awhile, though I started cheating by counting the sides and multiplying…
my cieling does that too! it has 3 little holes, and i used to think little aleins lived upstairs in my moms room. 😉
You just reminded me of when I used to spin a lot and then look at the ceiling.
I have times when I’m over tired, I stare at something, and everything exept that something grows dark. Then I usually fall over, or something.
I stare at the ceiling. Sometimes I start to see designs, faces, or creatures on it after a while from the markings in the plaster.
I live in a log cabin and I’ll sometimes look at the ceiling and make people and faces out of the knots and grain of the wood. Sometimes the people are scary!!
It works the same when I’m staring at the carpet but I feel more like I’m swimming.
My mom’s old house had a weird flat-but-textured ceiling, and my best friend still teases me about the time I came home from minor surgery, all hopped up on hospital-grade Demerol for the pain, and called her. I don’t remember calling her, but I believe it when she says I was babbling about an entire zoological menagerie dancing around in the shadows made by the texturing. I do remember passing out for like 14 hours and hurting something awful when I woke up.
I always try to see if the buy-in-bulk type panels are identical – can’t tell.
I stared at my ceiling once and……it stared 😯
sorry! I meant (stared back!) 😯
Why are things always funnier after 11 o’clock at night while under the influence of Sunny D?
I CAN NEVER LOOK UP AGAIN o.o
hehehehehe….i stared at the ceiling so long that it actually made a face at me once. Suffice to say, i no longer live there. Now i only stare at the ceiling when i want to go to sleep.
