#181 – Chair

When you have a desk job your chair is a very important part of your work day. It’s hard to find a good one though. It’s usually the people that have worked in the office the longest that will have the best chairs. The newer you are the more broken down and squeaky your chair is likely to be.

I hate when you get a chair exactly the way you want it, and then people who use it for no more than 2 minutes decide they just NEED to re-adjust it… I have a cinder-block sitting next to my computer station because I got tired of friends who used my computer to check their email constantly re-positioning the chair to fit their wants for only 30 seconds before getting up… So, they know that if I get in the chair and it’s not where I left it… EXACTLY where I left it… then they sit on the cinder-block next time they use my computer… and they know I’ll hold them to it, too…
    My chair hasn’t moved since then… ^^

  2. Eirikr says:

Even though most chairs I sit in only have one knob/lever, I still can’t figure out how to work it. I don’t even know what it’s for. Considering that I pride myself on being able to deconstruct and solve complex puzzles, this is a particularly aggravating point of shame.

  3. T.S. says:

I believe that the 2% rule is in effect on that one… If you don’t know, the 2% rule is this… You must be at least 2% smarter than any object which you attempt to operate… It’s a term I picked up at an old job where there was a change machine that always gave people a hard time… So, when they would come up and tell us it was broken, we would walk back over to it with them saying “Oh, don’t worry about it… it’s not broken… it just decides not to work about 2% of the time…”
Any co-workers who were within ear-shot of that comment would know exactly what we meant…
I was one of the techs at that job (glorified maintenance guy)… So, when someone would have a problem with something that was ridiculously easy to solve (they were just too lazy to solve it themselves), the other tech and I would call that an “error: ID10T” … We would say the letters and numbers out loud, but we both knew what we meant… “The error seems to lie somewhere between your keyboard and your chair.”

I FInd this one Oddly appropriate, we just got new furniture at work this week and the chairs are there weird uber-futuristic things where everything is adjustable, height, tilt, even the width of the armrest. One of the guy cant figure out how to get his to work right, it would just lower all the way down every so often (because he was bumping into the lever with his leg as he moved it around). He got so frustrated he went down to where the old stuff was waiting to get thrown away and got his ragged dirty old chair and put it at his desk.

  5. Madness says:

This one= win. The chair is always hard to adjust, then, if someone readjusts it while your away getting a file or something, they readjust it, do what they do, then go back. I’ve always disliked that, cause it takes forever for me to readjust it. 🙁

  6. KryHavok says:

Ive had a similar thing of readjustment, but this readjustment was more a moving of place. It still hasn’t found its home :-(.

The readjustment always happens to me, I like my chair to not tilt, but my brother and father always like to unlock it. Then I get in the chair lean back and SURPRISE! I almost fall out… although sometimes I like to tilt, and be easy so the tension is low… but that’s a nasty surprise when you don’t know its there haha.

  7. T.S. says:

    Havok… go get a cinder-block and do what I did… it works…

  8. Zheden says:

Hehe…where I work, we play musical chairs pretty much…everyone keeps snagging chairs every so often whenever the second shift is coming on…or when the power goes out and the lights are off, lol. I marked my chair though..completely wrapped one of the armhandles with duct tape 😛

    Mine!

  9. LordRetard says:

I’m a drummer, which is always exciting when it comes to setup, because even though I have access to a couple of kits, none of them are mine, so I can’t force people to keep ’em still. So people are always screwing it up, and when I go to play, I have to fix *everything*. There are so many things that you can mess around with, so if everything isn’t in the perfect place it will screw you up so bad.

  10. Brandon says:

…How many functions does that chair have?

  11. some kid says:

my mom yells at everyone who eyen touches her chair

  12. Knownimus says:

At least he gets to use a real computer chair, mine’s a kitchen chair. It broke years ago and we never bothered to buy a new one…

  13. Danger says:

…How many jobs does Biff have anyways?

  14. calan ree says:

my chair is boring a hole through my arm. okay, maybe it’s not that bad, but i have a rough patch on one arm from leaning on the crappy plastic arms when i draw. i keep trying to sit differently but end up in my weird drawing position before long. i need to make some plushy arm covers. 🙂

  15. Stuporman says:

I work at a TV tech support line. Much desk work. We get a new shift bid every few weeks or so and are required to move to new cubicles. When I get lucky I get the chairs with the adjustable armrest (they go up and down) as well as adjustable seat height. Now I’m a tall guy 6’1” so everything is nice and high, but then I get a desk where the only way to adjust the chair is to actually spin the seat and hold the wheels still. Like a screw. It talkes forever to get it the right height and I tend to spin when I get up to leave so eventually is back down again. 20 mins of spinning later, I’m back on the job. This happens every 2 weeks.

  16. Chryssta says:

Ya know, I never thought I’d be able to say this, but I’m thrilled to be a drafter at a new office, with new computers, with new chairs! I’ll get my own office. With my own chair. And I’ll set it my own way. And maybe I’ll get lucky and someone wont get jealous and steal it from me…

  17. ninjakyrosaki says:

Heh. I work in a call center handling outsourced calls for Citizens/Charter One bank. The thing I hate most about working in cubicle world is when people steal my chair and replace it with theirs. I like my chair, it’s been custom grooved to fit my behind. I cause people to avoid sitting at my desk by leaving all the empty moutain dew 12 pack boxes piled up on my desk. My supervisor hates it

  18. Kyle says:

It’s probably one of those chairs that has a jetpack, sub-machine guns, ejector seat, and a device that will serve martinis.

  19. Warcrime says:

Kyle…. you mean the Chair James bond uses when hes in the office?

  20. TKort says:

I just got tired of my crappy cheap office chair and bought an excercise ball to sit on instead.. it’s great :). I don’t recommend it for Biff though.. all sorts of potential dangers..

  21. Nate says:

So far Biff has ‘3’ jobs,

    1) pushing dirt

    2) some kind of desk job

    3) Inventor

he also goes to school so he can get a better job than that desk job. (promotion)

this is all supposition about the school part, 🙂

  22. Kaos says:

this has to be one of the best comics yet! I hate it when a chair has 5 levers with 4 uses… it makes you wonder what the fifth one is for (it always turns out to be a duplicate of one on the other side of the chair)

@TS: do you mind if i start using the Error: ID10T thing? that is just the most ingenious insult I have heard to date, cuz i know none of the morons i use it on will get it

  23. Avarie says:

I hate it when I come to work, and my desk is all out of order. i have everything in an exact order and an exact place. suprisingly, you cant see the floor in my bedroom. XD

  24. BinaryBible says:

    LordRetard

I hear your pain. My boyfriend and I share an old, beat-up drumkit. The ride sounds horrible so we wince the whole time we play it, and the crash is like death… but we can’t afford to replace it. We got so used to the crappy sound that when someone got him new drumheads for his birthday, we could barely tune it right!

Oh, and the chair itself sucks because he’s a lot taller than me and sits differently, so we are constantly moving the chair back and forth and we can never get comfortable anymore. It’s enough to make me quit drums and just stick with singing!

  25. APic says:

I don’t care how the chair is set as long as it’s not too low. Also, I don’t have to adjust it much because nobody is allowed to use it. If they need to use my computer, I take away the chair and tell them to stand up or use a different computer.

  26. DemonRex says:

That chair looks capable of achieving low earth orbit.

  27. Darkpheonix XIII says:

At school, we have these adjustable chairs in a class where you can adjust height, tilt, backrest height, and backrest tilt. I always put it in low height, high backrest, maximum backrest tilt, and the tilt lever can get stuck in the adjusting position, so then i have a rocking chair on wheels. I think i like Biff’s chair better though.

  28. Hoboapple says:

    I love this comic!!!

  29. Rachel says:

    That can’t be right…

  30. Garrett says:

My mom’s chair is simple. We both keep the same arm rest height and backrest setting, and the only thing we change is the seat height. She has it all the way down, and I have it all the way up! Two simple settings.

  31. Jenny says:

I have a high-quality chair that was looted from an abandoned downtown office. (Really.) The silly thing is that every single person who sits in it feels the need to adjust it, ALL THE TIME, and now the left elbow rest is broken and can’t be raised from its lowest position, and the rest of the chair creaks like it may break any time. 🙁

  32. OneMadrak says:

OMG! I HAVE THAT CHAIR! It has about 5,000 levers on it, adjusts in a gajillion different ways, and will do just about anything except make you toast in the morning. It’s very comfortable, but when I first got it, I was afraid to pull any of the levers for fear of getting the wrong one XD

    -M

  33. Elkian says:

I used love making myself tall in the chair, and spin….

The one I’m using now, the levers are broken/nonexistent/stolen by bandits from dimension 6.

  34. FangedFaerie says:

I love how often the ads reinforce the comic. There’s one selling office chairs showing on this page right now.

    Tee!

  35. Mach10X says:

Oh WOW… That’s the type of chair we use at my work. It’s called a Steelcase Leap. What do you think: http://www.office-environments.com/seatingonline/images/leap/Leap.jpg

  36. extremist343 says:

At home my laptop sits on my chair, I sit on my bed. Yes, it’s one of those fancy office chairs.
